FEMA / RBI / FEMA frequently asked questions

Accounts

NRIs and PIOs may open NRE, NRO and FCNR accounts, subject to KYC. NRE and FCNR balances are ordinarily repatriable; NRO balances are repatriable within limits after tax documentation. Joint holding with a resident is permitted on NRO accounts on a former-or-survivor basis in many cases.

Property

A person resident outside India who is a citizen of India, or an OCI, may generally acquire residential or commercial immovable property other than agricultural land, plantation property or a farmhouse, subject to the current regulations. Sale proceeds follow a separate repatriation path.
